Kalorama, which in Greek means "beautiful view," dates back to the early 1800s, when U.S. army Major Gustavus Scott built a home, later christened "Kalorama", at the present day intersection of S and 23rd Streets. The Kalorama residence was leveled in 1887 for the expansion of S Street, but many pre-civil war homes remain in the area, making it one of Washington's most popular historic districts.
This area is sometimes confused with Kalorama Park, a recreation spot in Washington's Adams Morgan neighborhood, to the southeast.
Besides being home to many historic mansions, Kalorama also offers an opportunity to live in "New York style" coop buildings, which offer great space and charm.
