Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle - Let The Developement Begin?

Bring On "Old" Bethesda Condos & Apartments?

Could it be that Woodmont Triangle's ("old Bethesda") condo and apartment development bonanza will begin with The Monty, on Fairmont Avenue?

Thanks to information from the fine folks at DCmud, all sources point to yes. This first of many developments appears to be on the way, and marks the beginning of a revitalization of "old" downtown Bethesda.

Woodmont Triangle in Downtown Bethesda

Redevelopment and a developer rush to purchase property in Woodmont Triangle began to take shape in a 2006 amendment to Woodmont Triangle's sector plan, allowing more density for residential developments.

A Highlight on the original "Visions and Goals" The Woodmont Triangles Amendment?

- "Provide opportunities to increase the supply of housing to serve a variety of income levels. Small-Scale Retail – Provide opportunities to retain existing businesses and expand opportunities for new businesses" - ermmm, heard that before.  I think only will tell how many of the small businesses will be sticking around

- "Arts and Entertainment District – Enhance the existing public arts programs in the Bethesda CBD and provide opportunities for both the visual and performing arts." - yes, one future condo development was approved on the condition of an arts center.

- "Safe and Attractive Streets – Focus on improving the safety and character of the existing streets. Establish Norfolk Avenue as the main street in the Woodmont Triangle Study Area". - this project seems to fit conform to this vision

Per DCMud - "there will be a "20-foot wide pedestrian right of way connecting Fairmont St. with St. Elmo's Avenue with retail fronting both streets as well as the ped path, cutting the long block and giving the building a corner presence."

Or if I'm in a really good mood, I may just post everything I've managed to dig up.  There may be more coming on our Downtown Bethesda page too - just to keep you in the loop!

Great days to all and here's to the Montgomery County actually sticking to a "plan" (a master one!). The "Woodmont Triangle project" can and will be special if there continues to be a focus on the "urban village".
